Scanned PDF → EPUB

Turn a scanned book into an ebook you can actually read

A scan is a stack of photos of pages. RifflePages reads the text, rebuilds the chapters and paragraphs, and gives you an EPUB that reflows on any e-reader, with a free preview before you pay.

From scan to e-reader

The Great Gatsby (1925), a scan from the Internet Archive (public domain), converted by RifflePages.

Why a scanned PDF reads so badly on an e-reader

A scanned PDF has no text in it, only pictures of pages. On a 6-inch screen you either zoom and pan across every page or squint at a page shrunk to fit. You can't change the font size, search, or look up a word.

Many converters that accept scans just wrap those page images in an EPUB file. The file is called an EPUB, but it still reads like a photocopy.

What RifflePages rebuilds

Every page goes through OCR (text recognition), then the layout is analyzed: running heads and page numbers are removed, paragraphs are joined across pages, and chapter openings become a real table of contents.

Italics, small caps, scene breaks, letters, verse and footnotes are kept, with footnotes as pop-ups where your e-reader supports them. Drawings stay as images, with their captions as text.

Questions

How long does a scanned book take?

A few minutes for most books. A long scan takes longer, because every page goes through OCR. The page shows the progress, and the book waits in My books if you leave.

Does it work on PDFs from the Internet Archive or Google Books?

Often, yes. Some of those PDFs carry their own hidden OCR text, which can be poor, and old books with unusual layouts (text set around illustrations) can come out imperfect. Check the free preview first: what you see is what you get.

What happens to pictures in the scan?

Drawings and photos stay as images in the EPUB, with their captions as text. Pages that are only a picture, like a frontispiece, stay whole.

Is my book private?

There's no account, and we don't track what you read. Your PDF is deleted as soon as it's converted, and the EPUB 24 hours later.
